Patterson brace sees United go second

FC United moved up to second place in the UniBond Division One North after a great performance at home saw them beat promotion rivals Ossett Albion 3-1 with two goals from stand-in captain Rory Patterson and one by debutant Peter Thomson.

Cheered on by a crowd of 2,160 the Reds took to the field knowing that a win would see them leapfrog their opponents and move in on pace setters Curzon Ashton.

But United couldn’t have had a worse start as a speculative ball from the Albion midfield cleared the Reds defence and striker Shane Kelsey got away from Liam Foster and coolly slotted the ball under Sam Ashton to put the the visitors one up inside the first minute.

The rest of the first half was all United with a another superb performance from Jerome Wright on the left and Cayne Hanley looking at home attacking on the right. The Reds made their way forward looking for the equaliser and had several good chances, hitting everything apart from the back of the net.

The breakthrough eventually came ten minutes before half time when Chris Baguley cut inside from the left and thundered a shot in which was parried by ‘keeper Neil Bennett and was pounced upon by Patterson for a real poacher’s goal.

The teams went in level, but United dominated the first half and could easily have led at the break. The second half saw Margy’s men come out and continue in the same form, enjoying good possession in midfield with an exceptional performance from Baguley junior in the centre.

But the United defence seemed to switch off for a second time and Albion striker Darrell Jenkinson found himself one on one with Ashton, Jenkinson put fortunately he wasn’t able to hand out the punishment the lapse deserved, firing ball well over the goal.

The let off seemed to spark United on and they had several good chances, especially when Patterson chested down a Baguely ball in the box, only to blaze over from six yards out.

Wright then broke on the left, taking on three of the Albion defence but his shot was just wide of the Albion goal. From the resulting goal kick United’s breakthrough came, a weak kick from Albion Bennett wasn’t dealt with by defender Stephen West and Patterson ran onto the ball, rounded Bennett and slotted home from a tight angle to put United 2-1 up. A goal that had Mark Hughes, Cup Winners’ Cup Final, Rotterdam 1991 written all over it.

Late into the game debuts were handed to Jamie Baguely and Thompson, the latter managed to cap his bow with a goal. The big striker found himself unmarked before getting onto a Wright cross and putting the ball away to make it 3-1 to United in stoppage time.

The Reds are now second in the league and have won each of their last four matches, attention turns to the President’s Cup on Wednesday as they have a home tie against Bamber Bridge at Stainton Park.
