RSS Feed (Really Simple Syndication)

RSS Icon What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a method of formating news items so that they can be used by 'News Readers' through a subscription.

Using RSS allows you to read headlines and articles from multiple sources in one place as soon as they are published instead of having to trawl round lots of sites or have multiple tabs open on your browser.

RSS feeds are a special kind of web page which is designed to be read by computers rather than people. The program that reads it for you will then format the information in whatever way suits you best. We have provided a list of FC United related feeds on the right but you don't need to limit your collection to just our news, and that's the beauty of RSS. Of course, not all sites provide a feed but it is fast becoming the norm.

So, how do I start?

You can either download a 'News Reader' or 'Aggregator' (such as the excellent BlogBridge or you can use one of the many online services such as those provided by Google, Yahoo and Bloglines amongst many others.

A News Reader is a piece of software that checks RSS feeds that you have subscribed to and displays them on your computer.

You can generally tell which sites offer a RSS feed by the orange icon in the URL bar and/or on the main body of the home page for that site. Often you can simply drag the icon into your News Reader or click on it and configure the subscription into your online aggregator if you are doing it that way.

More information regarding RSS can be found on the RSS wikipedia page.
