MARGY – NO PREDICTIONS YET!

FC United take on Nantwich Town this Wednesday, 7.45 p.m. at Gigg Lane in the first home match of the season to renew our long running rivalry with the Dabbers from Cheshire. With some promising displays in the preseason friendlies and an excellent win away to Marine on Sunday confidence is high in the camp. After a disappointing end to last season Margy is encouraged by the start made this season and the impact made by the new signings.

"We had a good start to the season on Sunday and obviously we’ll be looking to carry that on here at Gigg Lane on Wednesday. I thought that we were excellent for the first hour against Marine but we took our foot off the pedal a little bit after the two red cards reduced them to nine men. When it should have got much easier for us we failed to add to the goals we’d already scored. Still, it’s always a tough place to go, especially for the first game of the season when they’re obviously going to be fired up so overall we have to be happy with both the performance and the three points."

"The new lads looked good and seem to have settled in well. As we know, up front Norton’s just deadly - anything in and around the box and he’ll be looking to get on the end of it. I thought he was supported really well by Deegan who, when he keeps his game simple, can be a quality player. That’s something we’ve tried to get him to do and we saw the benefit of that at the weekend. Elsewhere, the defence looked solid with impressive showings across the backline. For many supporters there were a number of unfamiliar faces compared to the end of last season but I’m confident that the ability of lads like Martin Parker, Scott McManus and the others will have everyone knowing exactly who they are in next to no time. Sunday was a tough game for some of them but they coped brilliantly."

"Telford – only bad result"

"For those who took in a few of the pre-season fixtures I’m sure you’ll agree that Sunday was a continuation of what we’ve been producing in most of the games since early July. On paper some of the results against lower division sides might not appear to be too great but we’ve been trying out fringe players and mixing things up quite a bit, before fielding a more settled side in the last few matches. The one test we did come unstuck with was away at Telford. They looked a very strong side who I think will be up there challenging in the Conference North, although we didn’t do ourselves justice on the day. We were a little bit under strength, especially out wide with Jerome and Carlos missing. That was our only real bad result and performance though - everything else has been first class."

"To Wednesday’s game and we welcome Nantwich once again. We’ve played them a number of times over the last five years and I’m sure we’ll be in for another difficult game. We had two very impressive performances and scorelines against them last season but those will count for nothing on Wednesday. As with all teams coming to Gigg Lane, they’ll be relishing the opportunity to play in front of a big crowd in a Football League stadium and it’s our job to make sure that’s the only enjoyment that they’ll take from the game."

"As far as our prospects for the new campaign go, I’m not going to start making predictions as I’ve learnt my lesson after last time but we’re confident with the lads we’ve brought in to do the job we ask of them."

Get yourself to that football ground, FC United V Nantwich Town, Wednesday 25th August, kick off 7.45 pm, Gigg Lane.

• Norton "just deadly"

It’s only one game but……

The giddy factor went off the charts on Sunday with a fine performance and a winning start to the season. It makes a pleasant change as winning the first game is something we haven’t managed to achieve since the days of the North West Counties League.

Who can forget in our first season the 5-2 win in the pouring rain at Leek which was followed the season after by a solid 2-0 away win at St Helen’s Town in the sun? Our first game in the Unibond Division 1 North ended in a defeat 2-1 away at Lancaster despite an exciting end to the game and our first match in the Unibond Premier was a 3-3 draw at home to Matlock.

A disappointing season got off to a disappointing start with a defeat at home to Boston 2-1 last year and although it’s far too early to start counting chickens this season we can all dream… can’t we?

FANS CORNER

I won’t bring my pipe on slippers on Wednesday night even though we’ll be in the Main Stand together.

It was a bit like the Main Stand on Sunday. Not the best ground to get an atmosphere going but at times Marine was no better than some of the preseason friendlies. What happened to 90% of the crowd singing for 90 minutes?

I also heard one of our own players in particular got some stick off our own fans. What’s that all about? It’s not the FC way. Clap ‘em on, clap ‘em off, sing your hearts out get behind ‘em in between.

This Wednesday I will be making sure that the Main Stand know the MRE are here, and not a jesters hat or smoke bomb amongst us.
